Erhard's Theory of Revolution

Michael Nance, Associate Professor, Philosophy; Fall 2024 Residential Faculty Fellow

In his 1795 book On the Right of the People to a Revolution, the German philosopher Johann Benjamin Erhard gives a theory of political revolution and an account of the conditions under which revolution is morally justified. In this talk, Michael Nance gives a brief overview of Erhard’s theory, its philosophical motivations, and its contemporary relevance.
